DYDO operationalises Solar Livelihood Project at Iidaan IDP Camp, Hargeisa, Somaliland – 1 February 2026

Daami Youth Development Organization (DYDO), a marginalized minority youth-led organization, has successfully operationalized the Solar Livelihood Project at Iidaan IDP Camp, located 20 kilometers east of Hargeisa.

The intervention involved the distribution of 140 solar-powered lamps to vulnerable households, improving access to clean energy, enhancing household safety, and supporting daily livelihoods. Iidaan IDP Camp is home to approximately 600 vulnerable households who face severe limitations in accessing basic social services, including electricity, health, and livelihood opportunities.
The project is implemented under the Youth Climate Innovation & Renewable Energy Acceleration Program, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, and Family (MoLSAF) and Save the Children Somaliland. It forms part of broader efforts to promote youth innovation, job creation, entrepreneurship, and climate-resilient livelihoods among marginalized minority and IDP communities.
DYDO emphasized that the Solar Livelihood Pods model links clean energy access with youth-led micro-enterprises and mentorship, offering a scalable solution to energy poverty and unemployment in displacement settings.
The organization plans to expand the initiative to reach more households and additional IDP camps, subject to resource availability.

Advancing Minority Rights on Human Rights Day

Advancing Minority Rights on Human Rights Day

Today we were inspired to hear about the work Marginalized Community Advocates Network. org and Daami Youth Development Organization Somaliland minorities are doing to advance minority rights in #Somalia. Ibrahim Hassan Mohamed and Mohamud Sooyaan spoke on a virtual panel cohosted by U.S. Mission to Somalia and UK in Somalia in honor of #HumanRightsDay. Each year on December 10, we observe Human Rights Day in recognition of the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Article 19 of the UDHR enshrines freedom of expression for all persons, including marginalized and underserved populations. Embracing diversity strengthens democracy and increases respect for human rights.
